Jitter Test - Network Jitter Test


Jitter is the variation in the time between data packets arriving, caused by network congestion, or route changes. The longer data packets take to transmit, the more jitter affects audio quality. The standard jitter measurement is in milliseconds (ms). If receiving jitter is higher than 15-20ms, it can increase latency and result in packet loss, causing audio quality degradation.

If the results of the test show a Jitter rating higher than 15–30ms, there is most likely an issue with the Internet Service Provider (ISP). If unable to test plugged directly into the modem, the Internet service provider should be able to run the test. If they experience any jitter issues on their end, they should be able to resolve them.

Test While Jitter is Good:

Test the network while the jitter is lower than 15-20ms to verify good audio. Jitter results can vary, making it very difficult to diagnose the problem. The fluctuation might have been high when the issue was occurring and corrected itself by the time the test completed.

If network conditions are reliable on the ISP’s end, there may be an internal network issue. Try running the test plugged directly into the router and work back until discovering what network device is causing jitter.

What is a good jitter speed?

Jitter Speed test is the irregular time delay in the sending of data packets over a network. Acceptable jitter means what we are willing to accept as the irregular fluctuations in data transfers. According to Cisco, jitter tolerance is as follows: Jitter should be below 30 ms.


What is acceptable jitter for gaming?
Anything under 100ms should be acceptable but the ideal aim should be for latency to be no more than about 30-50ms. A somewhat related concept, jitter, is the variation (in milliseconds) in latency.
